Guide to Cala Llonga

'Sun-soaked days on soft sands, dramatic views and quiet nights – Cala Llonga on Ibiza's east coast is a dream for serious beach relaxation.'

Cradled by pine-dusted hillsides, Cala Llonga does quiet holidays like Ibiza does sunny ones – very well indeed. So if you're hunting for a holiday hideout where beach lazing is everyone's top priority, it's right on the money.
OK, the sheer beauty of the location makes it a mecca for sunbathers and water babies of all ages. But perhaps because it's so stop-dead-in-your tracks awesome, there's little else to do by chill on the sands taking it all in, bit by bit.
Cupped into a long, blue-skied bay and overlooked by gleaming white hotels, the sands are talcum-soft and the waters as calm and clear as a gentle mountain spring. Brightly coloured pedalos skim the soft waves, whilst kids play happily in the shallows and wooden beach playground. Grown-ups let the hours idle by, laid flat out on sunbeds. And all around, forested hills whipped into soft peaks provide a stunning natural frame to the scene.
Away from the sands, the resort's compact centre beckons with a mini-funfair and plentiful restaurants and cafes, many serving delicious views alongside local specialities, tapas treats and British favourites.
Why not lunch on guisat de marisc, a succulent seafood stew, accompanying it with chilled wine? By night the atmosphere remains easy-going, with most people enjoying hotel entertainment or the handful of friendly bars and discos.
For a bigger range of shops and exuberant nightlife, take a trip to nearby Ibiza Town, one of the Med's industrial-strength clubbing centres. Or set sail for Santa Eulalia to people watch beside its exclusive marina and dine in some of Ibiza's finest restaurants. Let's face it – what more could you want from this sunny, seductive island?

Beaches

Cala Llonga has a beautiful sheltered bay, boasting a splendid, gently shelving sweep of golden sand, making it perfect for relaxing. Spend your days lounging on the sunbeds and adopting the true Mediterranean lifestyle. There is also a variety of watersports on offer.

Eating out

There's a selection of bars, cafes and restaurants in Cala Llonga. Fish, inevitably, features on most menus and the locals use it to make some tasty stews. Cinnamon and cloves are used in a number of dishes, not least the highly sweetened desserts. The drinks native to the island are made from herbs and aniseed.

Nightlife

Try the local liqueur 'hierbas' as you relax in one of the bars or restaurants, some of which are run by friendly British residents. There are a few discos on offer locally but for a livelier night out visit the nearby, ultra-glamorous Ibiza Town.

Shopping

Those interested in shopping will be pleased to know that Ibiza has a long tradition of potters and a shorter one of jewellers who came to the island in its artists' colony days. If you want something a little more ethnic, then try the famous hippy market in nearby Es Cana. For the more serious shopper there is Ibiza Town, which is well worth a visit, and boasts a large variety of shops.

Local information

Cala Llonga is just 15km north of Ibiza Town, the capital - well worth a visit, crammed with shops, restaurants and bars that all come alive at night. If you want to get out and explore the rest of the island, why not hire a car and drive towards the limestone cliffs and lush, green hills that surround the sheltered bay of Portinatx or catch a ferry to Formentera, Ibiza's sister island whose beaches are reputed to be among the best in the Mediterranean.
