Guide to Bahia Feliz

'In beautiful Bahia Feliz, it's all about the beach.'

Happy Bay - that's exactly what Bahia Feliz means in Spanish, and we reckon it will get you grinning from ear-to-ear. Just north of action-packed Playa Del Ingles, Bahia is small and compact, so everything is within easy flip-flopping distance. Daily life here focuses on a picturesque, pedestrianised village square, its pavements speckled with the tables of open-air restaurants and cafes. Day or night, this is where most people congregate to relax and rendez-vous over a wine or arehucas – Gran Canaria's sugar-cane rum. And talking of evenings, the cosy bars in and around the square light up at night, offering an alternative to the otherwise hotel-centred entertainment. When the shopping urge becomes irresistible, Bahia's souvenir and duty-free stores answer your call, although you might well be tempted by the mega-malls of Playa Del Ingles. And for full-on family excitement, take a bus or cab to the theme parks or go-karting circuits centred on Playa and Maspalomas to the south. When you fancy sunning it, tootle along Bahia's promenade till you clock a prime spot on the sands. A breezy, dark-sand beach framed by rocky headlands and sparkling seas, it's great for whiling away a morning or afternoon, although the sometimes strong undercurrents aren't great for young children. The beauty of Bahia though is that you're close to host of other, golden beaches. Head to Playa Del Ingles to revel in its vast sands or further south to Maspalomas with its dazzling beach and incredible sand dunes, formed from dry Saharan winds.

Beaches

The beach at Bahia Feliz (which means 'Happy Bay') is small and as there is often a stiff breeze on the beach, it makes for some excellent windsurfing. At times, the tidal and wind conditions can make it unsuitable for young children.

Eating out

Bahia Feliz has a pretty town square decked out with a good selection of restaurants and pavement cafes.

Nightlife

The nightlife tends to be hotel-based, while in the resort it is mellow in the extreme: strolling, sipping and romancing tend to be the principle occupations.

Shopping

There are more than a dozen commercial centres in nearby Playa del Ingles, which provide a large range of gift shops, boutiques and fairly cheap electronic goods. They are scattered but the most numerous are in Playa del Ingles, including the area known as the Kasbah.

Local information

Cruising in yachts or old schooners can be organised as well as a day's sailing around the whole island. La Vegueta is the historic quarter of Las Palmas, where Columbus called on route to the New World.
