An introduction to Frigiliana

Holidays in Frigiliana are not for party animals. Voted Andalucia's prettiest village by the Spanish Tourist Board, this is the classic 'pueblo blanco', clinging limpet-like to a sheer hillside against the backdrop of the Sierra Almijara mountains. It's certainly no Torremolinos and the words 'bargain holidays to Frigiliana' don't often get seen. But if you're after the authentic Andalucia, this is it – with knobs on.

There are no hotels in Frigiliana, so if you're looking for all inclusive holidays you'll be disappointed. On the other hand you won't have to rough it. The village has several delightful, high quality properties for self catering holidays in and around it, most of which combine classic Andalucian charm with amazing views over the surrounding countryside. Take Casa Ascension, for example. Set on a high ridge amongst citrus and olive groves, it looks across rolling fields to the blue Med beyond and the craggy peaks of the Sierra Tejeda inland. Other irresistible options include Casa Celia, a lovely country house standing in an avocado and mango orchard, and the splendid rural villas, Cortijo El Albaricoque and Cortijo El Comendaor.

Of course, holidays in Frigiliana don't have to mean missing out on some fun beach life. Just down the road is the adorable resort of Nerja, famous for its panoramic promenade, rather grandly called the 'Balcon de Europa'. The resort has several good beaches. And while it's got an intrinsically Spanish atmosphere, it's not short of bars and restaurants catering admirable for the tourist trade.
