Holidays in Budva

An introduction to Budva

In its heyday, Hollywood royalty holidayed here. Nowadays, celebrities like the Rolling Stones are rocking up. Dubbed the new Adriatic hotspot, Budva is already being nicknamed the Balkans St Tropez. And it's easy to see why with its cobbled streets, smart boutiques and glittering seafront. You could say it's the metropolis of Montenegro's coastline. When we say metropolis though, we don't mean a cramped in concrete city. Sure, it's got its fair share of high rises. But they sit among cushiony green trees and are sandwiched between rolling mountains and pretty beaches. Besides, the main hub is concentrated in the old town. Jutting out into the gin-clear waters of the Adriatic, it's like a mini Dubrovnik with Venetian houses, bell towers and shady little piazzas. And as it's 2,500 years old, it's something of a treasure house, too. Make sure you tick off sights like the Church Sv Trojica and the Stanjevici Monastery. You can easily while away the days exploring its narrow streets too, which are lined with shops, cafes and galleries. When your thoughts turn to real relaxation though, hit Budva's shores. With a coastline of 21km, it's dotted with dinky bays and sandy beaches. The chief lure is Sveti Stefan, an island joined to the mainland by a strip of pink sands. Sophia Loren and Richard Burton were once regulars here. After dark, Budva's one of the main nightlife centres on the Montenegrin Riviera. Open-air discos are dotted along the waterfront and lively bars can be found around every corner. But it's just as easy to have a quiet night. The fish restaurants on the promenade come highly recommended as do the traditional eateries in the old town.
