Beaches

The sandy, gently shelving beach is just 100 metres from the resort centre and sprawls for three kilometres. It's not really for watersports fans - the famed loggerhead turtles take priority over everything, except pedalos. Sunbathers will be in their element though - soft sands, azure waters, sunloungers and parasols make Laganas one of the top spots in Zante for working on your tan. Restaurants and cafes line the back of the beach so it's not far if you need to quench your thirst or indulge in a cooling ice-cream.

Eating out

Laganas has countless bars and restaurants - you can eat out in a different style virtually every night of the week. Laganas's restaurants take in English, Italian, Chinese, Indian and even Canadian cuisine!

Nightlife

The choice of bars and nightspots in Laganas are a big pull for the younger crowd looking for lively nights out. The main strip leads down to the shore and is awash with late night clubs, loud music and fast food outlets. Smaller streets leading off the main drag have more family friendly bars, some specialising in English karaoke, live entertainment and Greek nights.

Shopping

Laganas has a good selection of shops geared towards tourists, from your basic mini-market, to the more elaborate gold and leather shops.

Local information

A colony of Mediterranean green loggerhead turtles nest along these shores, meaning watersports are restricted, although taking a trip on a turtle-spotting boat is a popular pastime. Weighing up to 180 kilograms, these graceful creatures have been migrating from Africa to Zante for centuries, looking to lay their eggs on Laganas Beach - reputedly because of the softness of the sand. Sighting a turtle, whether its protecting its nest on the beach or swimming in the ocean, is a truly memorable sight. Alternative daytime activity can be found in Zante Town. The capital of the island is the home to a fascinating Byzantine Museum and an interesting Solomos Museum, both brimming with historical treasures. After visiting these, take a seat in the shade at one of the waterfront cafes and watch fishing boats sailing into the delightful harbour.
